We Have Enough Evidence To Draft Articles Of Impeachment

October 4, 2019

The world moved dramatically in Washington by the time I woke up this morning.  We now have text messages showing the action of State Department employees working on the behest of Donald Trump to use foreign countries to interfere with a presidential election.  For my Republican friends let me make it clear in my opening paragraph as to why this matters.  Asking for foreign assistance in an election campaign is illegal.

There is more than enough proof, as we stand this Friday afternoon, for articles of impeachment to be drafted.

When I was a high school student in civics I repeatedly recall the instructor making it clear that we hold presidents to a higher standard.  And for good reason.  So much rides on their character and moral standing.  Clearly, Donald Trump never had a good civics teacher.  When a sound character is not in place we see what happens.

The throwaway line in the texts comes when an attempt is made to cover the backside of Trump,  by claiming that there is no quid pro quo at play in the matter with Ukraine.  But facts prove differently.  We know of an attempt to have an investigation launched, military assistance nixed, and a presidential visit nailed down only after assurances from the weaker side of the equation in play.  Reading the entirety of the texts makes it clear there is no other way to plausibly interpret them than as a quid pro quo.

One of the texts sums up my feeling to the point.

“As I said on the phone, I think it’s crazy to withhold security assistance for help with a political campaign,”

It sounds as if Bill Taylor, the top American diplomat, believes there was a quid pro quo.

It is time for Congress to act with the authority they are granted in the Constitution.  Donald Trump must be impeached.
