Donald Trump’s Autocratic Week Summed Up With Editorial Cartoons

June 6, 2020

The word president does not appear on this blog in front of Donald Trump’s name.  That is a long-time practice at Caffeinated Politics. To understand why only requires a review of the events of the past five days. The most shocking, shameful, disgusting,  and yes, deplorable actions and words yet from Trump in his term that has been a series of shameful, shocking, disgusting, and yes, deplorable actions and words.  He does not act like a president or understand any of the foundations about our nation that a president must know. In fact, he proves daily just the opposite.

I reminded my husband over dinner this week that Herbert Block, better known to newspaper readers around the nation as Herblock, had perfectly drawn President Nixon (even he gets the proper title from this blog) crawling out of the sewer in 1954. I never thought we needed to find a darker place from which a president would crawl from…..until this week.  As I have written so many times on this blog the power and timing of editorial cartoons is perhaps the most effective way to showcase a news story and place the emotion and mood of a nation into context.  And deliver it all with a punch.

As such I have assembled a number of cartoons from just this past week which underscores what Trump did to our nation.  Our Founding Fathers would wonder not so much what is wrong with Trump….but rather what in the world is wrong with the American people who would allow him to have even one more day in the office.   The following makes a powerful statement from editorial cartoonists.
