Traitors Do Not Get Praise, Robert E. Lee Statue Had To Come Down

Today, the only option that was acceptable was applied to a Confederate statue.

The Confederate statue of General Robert E. Lee was hoisted away from its place of prominence in Charlottesville on Saturday. While its placement for a very long time was one of deepest disappointment, the passionate call for its removal grew louder in the last few years following the 2017 white supremacist rally held in Charlottesville.

The statuary of those who worked to destroy our government, split the Union, and undermine our Constitution should never have been lionized. To have allowed their images to remain standing only served to further the Lost Cause charade that was meant to blunt the racist and hateful underpinning not only of the Civil War, but also the Jim Crow South.

It needs to be noted that many of these statues were placed not in the 1860s, but rather in the first years of the 1900s. The message they were intended to give was not lost on Blacks at the time.

Nor on those today who look back and grasp the meaning of that racial behavior.

The only way to view Confederates is the same way we look at any treasonous group. Call me old-fashioned but treason bothers me deeply.  The statues can stand in museums and be placed in historical context. But they must not be allowed to be placed in any public square.

To think that Robert Lee should sit, for instance, on any courthouse square when blacks of his time had no role whatsoever in any sense of the justice system, makes as much sense as placing a bust of Hitler into libraries in the international studies department. For him to been placed in a location of honor in Charlottesville was a slap to decency nationwide.

The Civil War is unique in that the winning side did not punish the losing one. Though there was a discussion of charging Confederate leaders with treason, in the end, the Union decided that it was better to be lenient and focus on reuniting the country. It was an error in judgment that impacts us yet today.

An unexpected consequence of this can be demonstrated with the Confederate leadership living to write their own ‘glorious’ stories in an effort to rewrite history.  It should surprise no one that they attempted to make themselves seem as noble. The Lost Cause is a distortion that is so laughable, if it were not so painfully absurd. And dangerous.

But Lee and all those who worked to undermine the union were not noble.  They were traitors to the United States. The leaders and fighters in that effort to destroy the Union must not be regarded with an appraisal other than treasonous.  Their statues must be hauled down and carted away.

Today on Facebook when I posted the news from Charlottesville a friend commented with a tone-perfect summation to this matter. He stated statues such as the one removed today should be placed in an area with proper context. Then added the following.

Next to others who scored major military victories when taking up arms against the United States. Maybe the generals who attacked Pearl Harbor and the bin Laden who planned the September 11th attacks. Also large plaques with the original language from the Confederacy’s founding document, explicitly spelling out that the Confederacy fought first and foremost to preserve slavery. Draw direct lines from the states’ rights to enslave Black Americans to states’ rights to reject Brown v Board & Civil Rights Acts and Voting Rights Acts. Not a big leap to today’s disenfranchisement efforts. If Robert E Lee & company always stands next to fellow enemies of America, then the statues can stand. Maybe throw in a Derek Chauvin for good measure.

And so it goes.

When Will Republicans Love Country More Than Partisan Aims?

Perfectly stated from Roll Call.

But to understand why Republican officeholders with an ounce of integrity, intelligence and self-respect don’t tear into Trump for his lack of civility, dignity, integrity and embrace of authoritarians is not to excuse their silence.

At some point, everyone should agree that there must be a time to put country over party and ideology. We are at that point now.

I am not at all sure that Democrats would behave any differently than Republicans are now behaving if the shoe were on the other foot.

In fact, as I recall, few Democrats complained about Bill Clinton even after he said, “It depends upon what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.”

But Clinton’s transgressions pale in comparisons to Trump’s.

The Democrat did not give aid and comfort to America’s longtime adversary or undermine institutions crucial to our freedom and national security.

Only Donald Trump has done that.

Front Pages Of International Newspapers Report On Trump Treason

A small sampling of international newspapers which featured the treasonous actions of Donald Trump.

Newspaper Front Pages Cover Trump Treason

I have assembled a sampling of over 15 newspapers from around the nation the morning after Donald Trump embarrassed our nation, and committed what can only be described as treason.  From Alaska to Florida the front pages tell a national narrative of what is being talked about,  and the manner in which it is being felt.

For all the steam that comes from this blog I must admit in all seriousness I never thought  there would be a day when an American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression.   I never thought or dreamed a leader could be so shameful, pathetic, and low.  Never did I think a president could be a traitor. and act in a treasonous manner.

Never did I think this blog needed a category called treason in which to collect posts.  Today that term was added.  Sadly.

All You Need To Know About Trump And His Treasonous Actions

Treasonous Trump: American President Surrenders To Russian Leader

One of my friends, who I have known the longest, often tells me that we have lived through some mighty impressive news stories.  A presidential resignation, attempted impeachment of another, space shuttle explosion, 9/11, and the 2000 Supreme Court decision that determined an election.  He is right, of course, we have seen a great deal in our lifetimes.

I never thought, however, I would see the day when an American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression.   I never thought or dreamed a leader could be so shameful, pathetic, and low.  Never did I think a president could be a traitor. and act in a treasonous manner.

Trump, in a stunning rebuke of the US intelligence community, declined today to endorse the US government’s assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, saying he doesn’t “see any reason why” Russia would be responsible.

Instead, Trump — standing alongside Russian President Putin — touted Putin’s vigorous denial and pivoted to complaining about the Democratic National Committee’s server and missing emails from Hillary Clinton’s personal account.

“I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today,” Trump said during a joint news conference following his summit with Putin.

It was simply stupefying for any rational person who was watching the shameful display.

Trump wants us to think that we are now going through the worst period of US and Russian relations.  That is a travesty! Many know history and read it.  Just in my lifetime the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred when the two nuclear powers went head to head.  What in hell is wrong with Trump?  What is wrong with those who think him credible?   Do they know the meaning of the word?

As this was playing out my mind slipped back to the words Trump uttered on January 20, 2017.  “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

What part of that oath did he not understand?

Or more to the point does his illegal and sham-ridden corrupt business dealings, which made it impossible for him to release his tax returns, now also prevent him now from acting as a real American while in office?

How much longer can people such as General John Kelly keep their place in this administration when it is so obvious that Trump completely dropped and ignored his oath of office.  More so how can anyone in this nation not vomit over the fact that Putin was there in person to see an American president surrender?

The onus is now on the Republican Party and their elected officials to use their words, votes, and subpoena power and get behind the need for a complete and utter denouncement of what Trump has done.  Up to now the GOP have been lap dogs, and if they are truly neutered and not able to act over this ghastly performance by Trump then history will judge them to be complicit in the undermining of America.

Never in our lives, my fellow Americans, have we been smacked so hard and dealt such a severe blow by one of our own.
