Large Porn Stash Found At Osama Bin Laden Compound

What does one do when not planning jihad?

The pornography recovered in bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, consists of modern, electronically recorded video and is fairly extensive, according to the officials, who discussed the discovery with Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The officials said they were not yet sure precisely where in the compound the pornography was discovered or who had been viewing it. Specifically, the officials said they did not know if bin Laden himself had acquired or viewed the materials.

Osama Bin Laden Killing Could Have Included Fighting Pakistan Military Forces

This is a huge nugget to the story of killing Osama bin Laden.

The fact is the United States needs, for better or worse, Pakistan.  The region can not allow for this country to fall into the hands of those who have no sense of modernity.   Like it or not we need to play ball with the government of Pakistan, and not allow the forces that seek to undermine the region to gain sway.

Having said that it makes the following story from CNN even more troubling.  The last thing Pakistan needs at this time is to be further humiliated on the world stage.  As much as we may have substantive issues with Pakistan I am trusting that much of the hard-nosed lessons that Pakistan needs to better understand can take place through diplomatic and behind the scenes moments.

The Obama administration had “very detailed contingency plans” for military action against Pakistani forces if they had tried to stop the U.S. attack on Osama bin Laden’s compound, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the plan.

Their names are not disclosed because of the sensitive intelligence information involved.

“No firepower option was off the table” during the Navy SEALs’ 38-minute mission on the ground, or during the time U.S. helicopters were in the air, one official told CNN. “We would have done whatever we had to in order to get our men out.”

The two U.S. officials also told CNN about the plan if bin Laden had been captured alive, which included taking him to Afghanistan and then out to the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian Sea.

All of the senior U.S. officials in the White House Situation Room during the assault were prepared to call their Pakistani counterparts if fighting between U.S. and Pakistani forces appeared imminent, one of the officials told CNN. The SEALs at all times retained the right of self-defense, and they could have fired at the Pakistanis to defend themselves.

Osama Bin Laden Had Cash On Body, Ready To Seek New Safehouse If Needed

The methods used by Osama Bin Laden to stay out of sight, and alive will make for many news stories in the weeks to come.  It was no small thing to avoid international recognition, and be prepared to flee at a moments notice to safer ground.  Evidence of that was found on the body of  bin Laden when he was killed Sunday in Pakistan.

Osama bin Laden had cash totaling 500 Euros and two telephone numbers sewn into his clothing when he was killed — sure signs that he was prepared to flee his compound at a moment’s notice — top U.S. intelligence officials told members of Congress at a classified briefing in the Capitol Tuesday.

The evidence of cash — which amounts to about $740 in U.S. dollars — and phone numbers was divulged to support the administration’s belief that bin Laden was prepared to escape the compound if alerted to an impending attack, the source said.

How Did Osama Bin Laden Live In Compound Within Pakistan?

One of the great reads today on yet another interesting spoke of the story.

But living in an urban area such as Abbottabad does require some contact with the outside world and a few people have spoken about the Bin Ladens’ habits and routines.

A newspaper hawker told the BBC that he delivered newspapers to the compound every day and at the end of each month his bill was promptly paid, always by the same man.

He never stepped inside the compound and his impression was that only one person lived there but, he added, that every now and then he saw a red pick-up vehicle, with a goat inside, being driven to the compound.

US officials said their long-term observation of the compound revealed that the inhabitants burned their rubbish inside the compound, rather than leaving it outside to be collected.

Another neighbour also told the BBC’s M Ilyas Khan that there was a domestic helper who lived in the area and who went into the compound to clean and to work in the kitchen. She divulged very few details but said that she never saw Osama Bin Laden in the house.

The residents of the compound clearly employed a number of domestic helpers. Abbottabad hospital staff have told the BBC Urdu service that among those being treated in the wake of the raid are two women believed to be maids employed by the family.

Senator John McCain Would Not Have Taken Out Osama Bin Laden In Pakistan

From Senator John McCain’s own lips…2008.

In July 2008, Larry King asked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), “If you were president and knew that bin Laden was in Pakistan, you know where, would you have U.S. forces go in after him?”

McCain said he would not.

“Larry, I’m not going to go there and here’s why: because Pakistan is a sovereign nation.”<!– for IE

What Does Al Qaeda Think Tonight About Osama Bin Laden?

Hmm…

A SENIOR U.S. OFFICIAL e-mails: “”Bin Laden was living in a relatively comfortable place: a compound valued at about $1 million. Many of his foot soldiers are located in some of the remotest regions of Pakistan and live in austere conditions. You’ve got to wonder if they’re rethinking their respect for their dead leader. He obviously wasn’t living as one of them.”

Pressure Mounts On Pakistan From India

This had to expected by the Pakistani government.  India has been correct for many long months in trying to get Pakistan to take the proper actions regarding the attacks on Mumbai.

India said it reacted with “grave concern” to news that al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had been hiding out “deep inside” Pakistan before his death Monday, and called on Islamabad to arrest militants connected to the attacks on Mumbai in 2008 that killed more than 160 people.

“We believe the perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attack, including the controllers and handlers of the terrorists who actually carried out the attack, continue to be sheltered in Pakistan,” the Home Ministry said in a statement.

“We once again call on the government of Pakistan to arrest the persons whose names have been handed over to the interior minister of Pakistan,” the statement said.

A spokesman for Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari declined to comment.
