There are some basic political rules that most obviously need to be followed. Never strike a kid in public, always defer to someone else to be the judge in the best jam-making contest at a county fair as there is no way for the pol to not anger someone, and never ever attack Social Security. Seasoned politicians are aware of how to navigate the electorate. But then some seek office and cannot follow any rules. Even the most basic ones. Which brings me to Donald Trump.
Coming off of a winning State of the Union performance last week, President Joe Biden looking fit and ready for Campaign 2024 was handed yet another winning issue Monday. With the proven popular topics of securing our democracy and fighting for health care rights for women in his quiver, he was gifted the GOP effort of “cutting” Social Security and Medicare. The Republican Party who has lost elections in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 rolled the bowling ball directly into the gutter when Trump opened his mouth during an interview on CNBC.
“So, first of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting,” Trump said when pressed about his plan for resolving the programs’ long-term solvency problems.
The ability to stay clear of obvious pitfalls is one that even the most novice politicians can navigate, but Trump who suffers from a lack of weighing and judging words before speaking, has now placed the GOP directly in the sights of the Biden 2024 campaign. With precision in timing, meaning instantly, Democrats stuck back with Joe saying: “Not on my watch.”
The timing today was also perfect for Democrats as the president was out on the hustings in New Hampshire where he was able to state unequivocally that, “If anyone tries to cut Social Security or Medicare or raise the retirement age again, I will stop them. This morning, Donald Trump said cuts to Social Security and Medicare are on the table again.”
While Democrats are united on the mission to guard against GOP attacks on these entitlement programs conservatives are split between those who understand the merits of the programs and the radicals who wish to limit and dismember them. Let the Republican Party now own those who offer the idea of raising the retirement age and also desiring a lower rate of inflation for COLA increases. Let the GOP now harvest what they have sowed with their cultish affair with Trump. As for Democrats, we are happy with the offering made by Trump as he forgot how to be a spokesperson for Republicans, the party that so gleefully handed him the reins of their party.
Plus, this is only Monday!
