One of the amazing personalities and big hearts in the world of Chicago radio is that of Eddie Schwartz.  I fondly recall him on WIND, and then on WGN during my teenage years and beyond.  I know I am not the only one in Wisconsin who once spent many hours listening to his program.  If you are like me you can still hum the tune to his show opening.  And you will never forget the hours he spent promoting issues for firefighters, or raising money for food drives in Chicago.  His health issues has sidelined him from the world, and he now is in a nursing home.  But as it was reported this morning on WGN News there is a way to make contact with him, and send warm wishes.

    Eddy,
It was a long time ago. I used to work nights as a computer operator. It was in the 80’s. I used to listen to you all night. I used to wonder, who you were as a person. I later realized that you are a true blessing.
You have helped many and I believe that we need many more people like you in this world, instead of the me people. Thanks for keeping me up during those lonely nights. God Bless You.
    Felipe

    Hello Eddie,

I was a late nite fan of yours while single and living alone many years ago, and I still have fond memories of you and your show. In fact, you even inspired me (like many, many others, no doubt) to drop off some groceries at the food drive you organized way back then. I also remember seeing you decades ago with my dad (who pointed you out to me) while shopping at the Brickyard shopping mall once.

God bless you, Eddie Schwartz! You were one of my favorite WGN radio hosts, and I’m sorry to say that WGN just isn’t the same without you, Wally Phillips, Roy Leonard, and a few others.

You were a great companion in the wee morning hours, and I wish you the best. Please take care, and I will keep you in my prayers.

I really don’t remember you on the radio but I did meet you once at the nursing home. Actually I was put out of my room so you could be moved in. I was moved across the hall with another gentleman. I remember the nights you called for “Nadia”. I guess she was everyones girl friend.

If you are still at the same place say HI to Nadia, Raj, Reggie, Carmilla and the polish princess. Don’t forget the two tormentors, Star Wars and Joan, they did wonders for my therapy.

I think about often and pray that you’ll recover as I did.

    God Bless

    Bob

Eddie You made the world a better place and I know that you are now in a better place. They say that once radio waves are sent into the air the travel forever into seep space. I hope this true so your voice will live forever and herad worlds away.

  10. John Bialas

My name’s John Bialas. I’ve been producing and hosting documentaries for Loyola University’s WLUW radio in Chicago since 1988. I invite you to log onto wluw.org this Sunday, Feb. 15 at 10 AM CST for my hour-long memorial salute to Ed Schwartz. I’ll be featuring clips from his early WIND Radio shows from the seventies, along with his complete original theme song and his favorite version of The Whiffenpoof Song. Northsiders can tune me in at 88.7 FM. If there’s enough positive response, I’ll schedule a second hour for the following Sunday.
May the Schwartz be with you!
