Who Would Really Want To Sit At Lambeau Field For Frozen Superbowl?

I often read Andy Baggot to stay conversational with the top stories in the sports world.  But after reading today’s column in the Wisconsin State Journal I really must comment.

First, I am not sure Baggot was really upset about the main topic of which we wrote.  There had to be a smile on his face when he typed his report about Lambeau Field.

The notion Green Bay might someday host a Super Bowl was put in greater perspective over the weekend when we learned just how full of itself the NFL has become.

There is no way that anyone could really consider Lambeau Field a place suited for the Superbowl.    Unless the football leagues pushed the event to April there is no way that 90% of the attendees from Anywhere, USA would consider sitting in a dome-free frozen stadium in of all places, Green Bay.    (No offense to Green Bay, but….)

The biting cold might seem endearing to Green Bay Packer Fans but the folks from Miami and Phoenix, Austin and Seattle would surely, and correctly, disagree.

One can just see the half-time show being conducted with everyone in a parka.  Talk about television ratings!

Which leads me to the next part of Baggot’s column dealing with the needs expressed by the NFL for a city to vie for the chance of holding the Superbowl.

How about free curb-side parking outside a “high-end, exclusive drop-in hospitality facility for our most valued and influential guests to meet, unwind, network and conduct business?” How about the local police providing, at no cost to the NFL, anti-counterfeit enforcement teams focused on tickets and merchandise?

I am not sure when football became something akin to whoring for cash, but suffice it to say the Superbowl is about athletic competition  as much as the idea that every politician just has public policy as the single motivating reason to enter public office.  In other words no one can be shocked at what passes for the NFL  ‘necessities’ needed to be considered a city for such an event.

Money and pure greed dominate and control every aspect of major league football.  It is an opiate for the masses, and nothing more.   The average person in Green Bay can be glad they will not need to deal with the crush of fat-cats in limos who attend Superbowls for the ‘sport’.
