9/11 Conspiracy Trials To Be Held In New York, Guantanamo Detainees Will Be Transferred

Civilian courts are the place these trials should be held. The road of justice for the detainees at Guantanamo, and for those possibly impacted by the detainees runs through the United States criminal justice system.    I think all those detained at Guantanamo should face the same legal hurdles in civilian courts, as the military commissions are, simply put, an affront to the rule of law.

Attorney General Eric Holder will announce Friday that five Guantanamo Bay detainees with alleged ties to the 9/11 conspiracy, including accused mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will be transferred to New York to go on trial in civilian court, according to two Obama administration officials.

Holder’s news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET. The officials did not want to be named because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

The officials said Mohammed, Ramzi Bin al-Shibh, Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali and Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi will all be transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York — a short distance from the World Trade Center towers that were destroyed in the September 11 attacks.
